Prestigious qualification for local decorators keeping traditional skills alive

A specialist decorating company based near Market Harborough has become one of the UK’s leaders in traditional decorating techniques with the award of a prestigious industry qualification to four of its staff. The British NVQ 3 Heritage Skills, administered by the national Heritage Training Group, has been presented to Devereux Decorators (

in recognition of the specialist decorating skills and traditional techniques that their staff have demonstrated on a range of conservation and restoration projects.

The Devereux team, based in Stonton Wyville, now includes 4 out of only 12 NVQ 3 Heritage skills qualified decorators nationally. “We are delighted to have one third of the national quota of these highly trained craftspeople working for us,” comments Gail Devereux Batchelor, Managing Director of Devereux. “We have always placed a high value on training and quality and are delighted to have one of the most highly qualified team of staff in their field in the whole of theUK.”

In order to earn the qualification, the Devereux staff had to demonstrate mastery of skills including painting and decorating with traditional materials, such as limewashes and distempers on conservation and restoration projects. They also had to show their skills in hanging specialist wallcoverings on complex surfaces, including hand painted silk coverings. “Our dedicated team comprises ‘old hands’ alongside younger, more recently qualified apprentices who are being trained to the highest standards working on heritage sites and private residences,” comments Gail. “These youngsters will become the custodians of the traditional skills that are needed for the future.”

The independent assessor took into account the various heritage, conservation, and restoration projects that the Devereux team had worked on, including the Master’s private quarters at JesusCollege, Cambridge, along with private residential work in the Midlands, Rutland, Mayfair in London and Newmarket.

The Devereux team regularly demonstrate their traditional techniques at workshop events which are run in conjunction with SPAB (The Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings).

These events enable us to show people what can be done to preserve and safeguard historic buildings for the future,” explains Gail. “We use these techniques on stately homes, colleges, castles and residences across the country to maintain their beauty for generations to come.”
