Oxfam in Market Harborough

Oxfam is holding an information evening in Market Harborough on Tuesday 15th March from 6.30pm (for a 6.45pm strart) – 8.15pm at the Market Harborough Baptist Church, 25 Coventry Road, Market Harborough, LE16 9BX. The evening is being held for local people to find out more about Oxfam, what it does, how the charity carries out its work and how people in the town can get involved.

Sarah Barber from Oxfam’s Regional Fundraising team in the Midlands said: “Many people may not know this but the Oxfam shop on the High Street in Market Harborough raised an amazing £30,000 for the Asian Tsunami in 2004, in just the first three weeks after the disaster hit. So we are sure that there are local people who are interested in the issues that Oxfam addresses.

“People in Market Harborough, the strong community spirit and the enthusiasm which the town takes on social issues has encouraged us to arrange this evening. The town has a lot going on making it a vibrant location with fun, community orientated events taking place all the time.”

There will also be a guest speaker called David Hewitt at the information evening. David Hewitt is an Oxfam worker who has recently returned from Armenia. He will be talking first-hand about his experiences overseas in the Oxfam project which helped to create and secure jobs for local people, supporting the rights of women and sustainable initiatives for farming.

As well as talking about Oxfam’s work in Armenia and elsewhere, we will also let people know how they can get involved with Oxfam in Market Harborough. For example, as well as our two local shops, there are a group of individuals who are keen to start up a local fundraising group, and are looking for a few more volunteers.

Whether you are keen to get involved with Oxfam in your local area or you are just interested in finding out more about Oxfam’s work and coming along for some tea and cake, Oxfam would love to see you!
