Local artist works on award winning church renovation

Derek Hunt

An artist from the Harborough area is celebrating his involvement in an award winning church renovation. Architectural glass artist, Derek Hunt of Limelight Studios in Medborne designed and constructed the 35 sq metre glass installation in St Lawrence Church in Alton, Hampshire. The renovation project, incorporating the addition of a pod containing toilets, a kitchenette and vestry with an outer glass skin, recently won the John Ambrose Award for Architecture.

Derek regularly works with churches and public organisations as well as private businesses across the UK. This particular glass installation was specifically designed to reflect the colourful history of the church, relating it to the Gospel. His stained glass wraparound wall is the centrepiece of the project and illustrates Alton’s history going back as far as Roman times. The panels feature a selection of images including a suit of armour from the Civil War, hop pickers, the local school and a map of the town from 1666.

“The design is based on a visual representation of the rich history of the church and included the medieval floor tiles sourced from the local museum which seemed particularly apt as well as being visually striking,” explains Derek “This was a fascinating brief, with lots of ground to cover in terms of history. I also wanted to make some reference to things that have shaped the town such as the advent of the railways and local industries. It was a real privilege working with the team at St. Lawrence and winning an architectural award was the icing on the cake.”

Derek Hunt set up Limelight Studios in 1985 and his commissioned designs can be found in theatres, schools, public libraries, hospitals, shopping centres and private buildings in Great Britain and Europe. Current projects include a hanging glass sculpture for a new church, as well as a series of wall mounted sculptures for a new hospital in Scotland. He is also in the middle of an 18 month Artist in Residence post for the Churches Conservation Trust.
