Little Angels Day Nursery in Market Harborough is the first in the town to be named as outstanding by Ofsted in an inspection which took place last month (September). The nursery, situated on Angel Row, received the highest possible award of outstanding against every single inspection judgement. The areas assessed included safety procedures, promotion of healthy lifestyles and leadership and management, as well as the children’s overall happiness and achievement.

The Ofsted report, published this week (week beginning 3rd October), also consistently praised nursery staff for the way that they cared for the children, creating a safe and exciting learning environment, commenting on the high quality of training and professional development. Other areas singled out for praise included the way that observation and assessment is used to inform planning, ensuring that the children make “excellent progress towards their early learning goals”.

Little Angels is the only nursery in Market Harborough to be classed as outstanding and nursery owner Bridget Crane is delighted with the outcome of the inspection. “With top marks for every criteria and only one recommendation for further development, the report simply couldn’t have been any better,” she comments. “We were thrilled to receive such a glowing report, as we all strive to provide an excellent and nurturing environment for our children. It is gratifying to have our high standards officially recognised and is a well deserved reward for our dedicated staff.”

Six of the Little Angels staff  have a degree in childcare, two have the higher qualification of Early Years Professional Status and twenty (80%) overall have recognised early years qualifications. “We place a high emphasis on the quality and training of our staff,” comments Bridget. “We also have a large proportion of mature staff who bring a wealth of experience, and as a result our turnover of staff is much lower than in many other early years establishments.”

The inspection, which takes place approximately every three to four years, consisted of an unannounced one day visit. Half the day was spent observing the children in the nursery environment as well as talking to parents to get different perspectives on the quality of care. The remainder of the inspection involved looking at policies, procedures and documentation, ensuring that everything was in place.

Set up in 2001 by Harborough born owner Bridget, Little Angels is a privately owned nursery which currently has around 120 children on roll and a total of 27 staff who work across 4 rooms organised according to age. The nursery cooks its own meals on site and has two recently developed outdoor play areas. The nursery also received the Healthy Tots Award in March in recognition of the high standards achieved in healthy eating, emotional health and well being and physical activity.
