Leicestershire woman launches Redhead Day UK – a celebration of all things ginger

Redheads at last year’s Redhead Day UK event

Market Harborough based Jessica Shailes has this month announced plans for a third annual ‘Redhead Day UK’, which will celebrate all things ginger.

Taking place in London on 12th September 2015, the event will see redheads from across the UK and further afield joining together in a celebration of their genetic rarity.

A redhead herself and owner of redhead haircare brand ‘Everything for Redheads’, Jessica first came up with the idea of organising an event to celebrate ginger pride after attending the original Redhead Day in the Netherlands. Starting in Manchester two years ago, the event has grown in popularity and organisers decided it was time to treat Londoners to a full blown invasion of the redheads.

Previous events have seen a music awards ceremony in form of the world’s first MOGOs (Music of Ginger Origin) as well as ginger discount cards, redhead photography, and pop up shops selling merchandise for red heads.

Jessica comments “To make this year’s event possible and better than ever, we are launching an Indiegogo campaign with a range of related sponsorship & merchandise available in advance.” Items that can be bought to help fund the event range from wrist bands to mugs. Larger sponsorship packages are also available for businesses wanting to tap into the ginger pound. The epicentre of this year’s RHDUK is going to be near Angel in North London, with plans for live music, photography, art, film and entertainment for all the family. The organisers want the event to be free to attend but will need the support of redheads and ginger appreciators in advance of the day to make it possible.

“We will know if the kickstarter has been a success by the 20th of July and we then hope to announce full plans for the day itself after that date” comments Jessica. “The day is all about celebrating our genetic rarity, and embracing what makes redheads stand out. We hope that everyone who attends RHDUK has a great time and leaves feeling empowered by their red hair.”
