Harborough dad takes Three Peaks Challenge at daughter’s request

A local man is attempting the Three Peaks Challenge in Yorkshire next month (May) to raise money for Cancer Research in memory of his wife who died last year. Phil Taylor, a prison officer from Market Harborough, is taking part in the challenge at the suggestion of his daughter Beth (13) who is a pupil at Welland Park Academy.

The Three Peaks Challenge involves travelling up and down Yorkshire’s three highest hills, Pen Y Ghent (694 metres), Whernside (736 metres) and Ingleborough (720 metres). To make the challenge even more difficult, participants are required to complete it all within just 12 hours.

“My daughter Beth suggested that it would be good to do something in memory of her mum, Cheryl, but insisted that it must be something hard!” explains Phil. “Having looked for different fundraising activities on the internet, she came across the Three Peaks Challenge and eventually talked me into taking part.”

Phil will be tackling the course with eight other men, including fellow prison officer Trevor Lorking and Phil’s brother Kev who is flying over from his home in Dubai specially to take part. Phil has been training by walking up and down hills in the Harborough region as well as climbing the Wrekin in Shropshire and running regularly to improve his fitness levels.

All the money raised will go to specifically Cancer Research projects in Leicestershire at Phil’s request.
“Cheryl was treated at the Leicester hospitals where the staff did all they could to help her,” he comments. “Having worked as a ward sister in the oncology unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary and then a Macmillan nurse, Cheryl was dedicated to helping people with cancer so we felt it was fitting to raise money to help others in her memory.”

Cheryl died in August last year aged just 41 years old, leaving behind a son Luke aged 10 as well as Beth. The family are also taking part in the 24 hour Relay for Life event at Kibworth on 7th/8th July.

The team are aiming to raise £2,000. Anyone who wants to sponsor them can visit www.justgiving.com/philip-taylor2 to make a donation.
