Sick, injured and orphaned hedgehogs have found a new home at the LeicestershireWildlifeHospital thanks to the generosity of a Harborough company. Estate agency and chartered surveyors Andrew Granger & Co has sponsored part of the construction of a new hedgehog enclosure at the hospital in Kibworth.
The outdoor enclosure has communal feeding areas and individual nesting boxes to help the hedgehogs recuperate and acclimatise to the outdoors before they are released back into the countryside. There are currently 10 hedgehogs residing in what has been affectionately named ‘Hog Lane’ due to the rows of house shaped nesting boxes which all feature miniature versions of Andrew Granger & Co’s distinctive triangular ‘To Let’ boards.
We think the hedgehog enclosure is a fantastic idea and are delighted to have the opportunity to act as landlords for Hog Lane,” comments Jill Griffiths, Partner at Andrew Granger & Co. “The hospital does a great job nursing injured animals back to health and the enclosure offers an important stop gap for the animals between the nursing centre and being released back into the wild.”
Funded solely by donations and fundraising activities, the hospital rescues and rehabilitates injured wild animals. The houses in Hog Lane can be sponsored by individuals or businesses for just £1.25 a week which goes towards running costs such as medicines, bedding and food.
The LeicestershireWildlifeHospital is a non-profit charity and treats all wild animals regardless of cost. Itis staffed by volunteers, so all donations and sponsorships go directly to treating the animals in their care. Having recently relocated to a new site in Fleckney Road, Kibworth after outgrowing their former premises, the centre now has a veterinary examination area, specialist treatment rooms and large outdoor housing areas, which includes the new hedgehog enclosure.
Naturally shy and nocturnal, hedgehogs are often known as the gardener’s friend as their diet includes many garden pests, but their numbers have fallen by an estimated 25% in the past 10 years.
The protection of these animals is becoming an increasingly important issue so we are delighted to have these new facilities,” comments Teri Humber, fundraiser, for the Leicestershire WildlifeHospital. “Our hedgehogs have adapted very well to their new enclosure and we are very grateful to Andrew Granger & Co for their support.”
