Harborough charity director urges support for Nepal

With news of a second, smaller earthquake hitting Nepal recently after last month’s disaster, the Harborough based director of a charity that works with disadvantaged children in Nepal has put out a plea to people in the Harborough region for help.

Charles Barton of Coventry Road has been involved with the New Futures Nepal charity since 2002 after visiting the region and seeing the scale of need and deprivation. The charity runs the Hope Centre, which is currently home to 45 Nepalese children who would otherwise be homeless. The centre provides carers, education and medical support for the children. Run entirely by volunteers, the organisation relies on charitable donations and fundraising activities.

Reporting on the situation from Australia where he is visiting his newly born granddaughter, Charles explains that whilst the children have escaped injury, like thousands of others in the stricken country, they are in need of urgent support.

“We have managed regular contact with Kathmandu and have been reassured to hear that the children are safe and that the home is still standing,” he comments. “However, they are sleeping outside due to concerns about the safety of the structure and are short of food, power and water. Understandably many are traumatised by recent events.”

The charity has set up an emergency appeal which so far has raised £8,000. There is also a small display about the situation in Nepal at the Angel Hotel on the High Street which supports the charity.

“We are not a first response charity but we do have direct contact with people living and working in Nepal,” adds Charles “The situation is dire for so many and we would urge people from the Harborough area to give whatever they can, however small to our organisation or any of the rescue charities helping in the aftermath.”

As New Futures Nepal is run by volunteers, every penny donated goes towards helping those most in need with any overheads covered by the tax relief received from the Government.
