Leicestershire’s very own Royal cake-maker, Fiona Cairns, opened Market Harborough’s first Waitrose store at 8am on Thursday 27 September.

Fiona Cairns Royal Wedding cake-maker opens Waitrose Market HarboroughFiona Cairns Ltd was commissioned to make the Royal Wedding Cake for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last year and has supplied Waitrose for more than twenty years.

To mark the opening of the Springfield Street store, Fiona Cairns will be giving away 1,000 limited edition Leicestershire-inspired fairy cakes with designs including Market Harborough’s Old Grammar School Building and the Leicestershire Fox.

Fiona will officially open the store with Meadowdale School pupil, Zoe Morgan-Williams, who created the winning entry for a Waitrose design a bag for life competition. One thousand of the jute bags will be given away free to customers from Saturday 29 September 2012.

Fiona Cairns, said:

“We’ve really enjoyed working with Waitrose having supplied them with cakes since 1992. I’m very flattered to be asked to open the new Waitrose in Market Harborough. I’ve been waiting for a store here for many, many years and I’m sure I’ll be one of the most regular customers!”

“We are making 1,000 fairy cakes to be handed out at the new branch on the day of opening decorated with the Market Harborough Old Grammar School building, and the Leicestershire Fox. These are all handmade and hand decorated in our bakery in nearby Fleckney.

Loretta Taylor, Branch Manager at the new Waitrose in Market Harborough, added:

“The atmosphere in town has been tremendous and we’re over the moon that Fiona Cairns and Zoe will be joining us to open the branch next week.

“I know I speak for all 135 new Partners* when I say Waitrose are thrilled to be opening in Market Harborough as we have been eager to come here for a very long time and make a really positive contribution to the local area.

With Fiona’s Leicestershire-inspired fairy cakes and Zoe’s competition-winning design for our bags for life, we have something really special to help us share our excitement with our first customers.”

The new Waitrose, which received more than 600 applications for the 125 new positions being created at the branch, will provide Market Harborough customers with its very latest offer.

Waitrose Market Harborough will also donate £12,000 every year to local causes through its Community Matters scheme and 250 hours of its Partners time through its Partner Volunteering initiative as nominated by customers and Partners. The first three local causes to benefit in the shop’s first month of Community Matters are Great Bowden Primary School, Meadowdale Primary School and St. Joseph Primary School. **
