The production team behind Channel 4’s Grand Designs TV programme has enquired about featuring an eco-house which a trainee architect is hoping to build near Market Harborough on a future series of the primetime programme. The eco-house plans have been designed by Greg Mitchell, Creative Director at Leicestershire based Greg Mitchell Architecture & Design (www.gm-ad.co.uk).

Greg, who is also studying for his Professional Diploma in Architecture, has designed a family home for his parents applying the process of Cradle to Cradle design – a system of infinite recycling which aims to create waste free systems and which has never before been attempted in the UK. Known as Windy Slopes, the design is the result of almost two years development and is currently awaiting planning permission. If approved by Harborough Council, the house will be built along Melton Road, close to the A6 roundabout. It is hoped that construction will commence early in 2014.

“It has long been my family’s dream to downsize to a home where we can live, work and care for our horses all in one beautiful location,” explains Greg. Inspired by the rural churches of the neighbouring villages and traditional L-plan farmhouses, the design acknowledges the heritage of Welland Valley through its form and use of materials. Greg hopes that his zero-carbon family home will also help to inspire others. “It is almostimpossible to overstress the importance of what is being proposed, not so much because of what Windy Slopes is, but in terms of the legacy it could leave behind,” he comments.

Joe Welch of Andrew Granger & Co, who has acted as planning consultant to Greg throughout the project, is impressed by the proposals and the design’s eco credentials. “It’s easy to see why the team at Grand Designs is interested in the proposed building; it’s a great example of how modern architecture can take inspiration from local architecture,” he comments. “Greg has worked hard to ensure that the design is individual yet sympathetic to the local surroundings, whilst adding some truly inspiring design along Melton Road.”

The application for Windy Slopes can be viewed at Harborough District Council’s planning portal at www.harborough.gov.uk/planning under reference 12/01706/FUL.
